What Is the Plot For Living Movie?

The movie depicts the life of Rodney Williams, a senior bureaucrat working for the London County Council in 1953. Despite being surrounded by paperwork and having lost his enthusiasm, his life changes when a group of women petitions the council to redevelop a bomb site into a playground for children.

After refusing to take any further action on the matter, Williams receives a cancer diagnosis, but he hides it from his family and instead attempts to commit suicide. Failing to do so, he meets Mr. Sutherland, who takes him out for the night and helps him regain his youthful vigor.

Williams begins spending time with Miss Harris, a former colleague who works at a restaurant. Williams’ neighbor spots them together and informs his family, causing tension. Meanwhile, Williams attempts to tell his son Michael about his diagnosis, but they both struggle to bring up the topic.

As his condition worsens, Williams realizes that he wants to do some good before he dies and rallies his colleagues to construct the playground. They succeed, but Williams passes away shortly afterward.

At Williams’ funeral, Michael realizes that his father had told Harris about his diagnosis, but not him. Williams’ colleagues pledge to continue his legacy, but they soon revert to their old ways. However, Williams’ letter to Mr. Wakeling reminds him of the playground and its importance.

Wakeling visits the playground and meets a police officer who had seen Williams there shortly before his death. Despite sitting in the cold, Williams was singing a Scottish folk song from his childhood and appeared happier than he had been in a long time. The movie ends with Wakeling consoling the officer and suggesting that Williams’ legacy lives on through the playground.
